
Four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek and Australian Open winner Elena Rybakina advanced to the second round at Roland Garros on Monday, while veterans Stan Wawrinka and Gael Monfils announced their retirements, reported Xinhua.
Third seed Swiatek, playing her first Grand Slam since beginning a coaching partnership with Rafael Nadal's longtime mentor Francis Roig, eased past Australian teenager Emerson Jones 6-1, 6-2 in just one hour while second seed Rybakina also put on a dominant performance to beat Slovenia's Veronika Erjavec 6-2, 6-2.
In other women's matches, recent Rome champion Elina Svitolina battled back to defeat Hungary's Anna Bondar, while former French Open finalist Jasmine Paolini, Karolina Muchova and Jelena Ostapenko also progressed.
In the men's draw, two-time French Open runner-up Casper Ruud, Ben Shelton, Alex de Minaur and Andrey Rublev all progressed to the second round.
China's Wu Yibing defeated American Marcos Giron 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 in 2 hours, 12 minutes to earn his first career main-draw victory at the French Open. Wu will next face 10th-seeded Italian Flavio Cobolli.
On the same day, Wawrinka and Monfils both bid farewell to the French Open after they lost in the first round. They received video tributes from Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were shown on court.
Former French Open champion Wawrinka, 41, played his final match at Roland Garros, losing 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 to Dutch lucky loser Jesper de Jong.
"I was lucky to play for 25 years as a tennis player," Wawrinka said. "It was amazing – more than what I could expect. To finish with so much support, so much love from the people, that's exactly the reason why I kept playing for so long."
Monfils, 39, lost to French countryman Hugo Gaston 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 6-0.
