Schools resume classes after summer vacation

The new school session will begin across the country in between Wednesday and Friday after the summer vacation.

Classes at the schools in the northern part of the country will resume on Wednesday while in the middle and southern parts on Thursday and Friday.

Meanwhile, the police will monitor traffic more closely than usual near schools during the first weeks of the school year with the view to prevent accidents and ensure a safe trip to school for children, said National Police Board in a press release on Tuesday.

“It is known that visible police control calms traffic and increases the safety of schoolchildren on their way to and from school,” said Chief Superintendent of the National Police Board Tuomo Katajisto.

The main focus of police control in the next few weeks will be on driving speeds and compliance with pedestrian crossing rules.

Speeds will be monitored particularly in the vicinity of schools and in other risk places in built-up areas. Monitoring will take place across Finland this week and next week.

The behaviour of cyclists and operators of electric personal transport devices as well as these road users’ compliance with traffic lights, use of safety equipment and factors causing distraction in traffic will also be controlled.

Attention will also be paid to vehicle safety, and stopping and parking in accordance with the Road Traffic Act when dropping off or picking up schoolchildren.

”The law requires particular caution where children are around and driving at a sufficiently low speed. This is especially relevant now that the very youngest schoolchildren who are not used to traffic again start to travel to and from school. People should also remember that by law, too, a child is a living warning sign in traffic,” Katajisto added.

The Finnish- and Swedish-language comprehensive schools and general upper secondary schools in Helsinki will start autumn term on Thursday, said the City of Helsinki in a press release on Tuesday.

The term for Finnish-language pre-primary education will start on the same day.

“This school year, we are investing in enhancing pupils’ well-being and improving literary skills, in particular. All schools are practising emotional and interaction skills and addressing pupils' absences more systematically. Language, learning and knowledge are strongly connected. Therefore, one of the key priorities is the improvement of pupils' linguistic development and multiliteracy skills,” said Outi Salo, Head of Basic Education.

The students completing basic qualifications at Helsinki Vocational College and Adult Institute and students in preparatory education for an upper secondary qualification (TUVA) started their studies on 2 August.

The autumn term of the Helsinki Upper Secondary School for Adults begins on August 25, and the general upper secondary school line for adults at Tölö Gymnasium on August 28.

This August, 27,000 children, 2,568 of whom are starting early childhood education, are participating in early childhood education and pre-primary education provided by the City of Helsinki. In basic education, there are more than 47,000 children and young people. The city also works closely with private education providers.

The city's general upper secondary schools have approximately 10,000 students, and Helsinki Vocational College and Adult Institute almost 20,000 students. It is possible to apply to study all year round through a continuous application process.

About 100,000 people participate in adult education centre and Arbis courses every year. The registration for the courses is now open and they will start on September 4.
