Portugal edged host Hungary 3-2 in a thrilling Group F clash of the 2026 FIFA World Cup European Qualifiers on Tuesday, silencing a raucous home crowd, reported Xinhua.
Portuguese captain Cristiano Ronaldo, 40, scored his 39th World Cup qualifying goal, tying retired Guatemalan forward Carlos Ruiz as the all-time top scorer in World Cup qualification history.
Hungary, which last reached the World Cup finals in 1986, has now failed to win in 16 meetings with Portugal.
Barnabas Varga gave the hosts hope with a 21st-minute header and struck again in the 84th to make it 2-2. But Portugal responded almost immediately, with Joao Cancelo netting the winner just two minutes later.
Bernardo Silva had earlier equalized for Portugal in the 36th minute after Varga's opener, while Ronaldo converted a penalty in the 58th minute to briefly put his side ahead.
Portugal tops Group F with two wins, followed by Armenia, who beat Ireland 2-1 earlier in the day. Hungary and Ireland both remain winless, each with one draw and one defeat.
