Harry Kane missed a first penalty in an official match in almost three years but then spared Bayern Munich from another potential German Cup disaster with a stoppage time 3-2 winner at third division Wehen Wiesbaden on Wednesday.
The first round match started in expected fashion when Kane converted a 16th minute penalty and Michael Olise made it 2-0 in the 51st.
But Bayern were wasteful, with newly signed Luis Diaz alone missing five top chances, and Wiesbaden hit back from captain Fatih Kaya for 2-2 in the 64th and the 70th.
Wiesbaden goalkeeper Florian Stritzel saved Kane's second penalty in the 74th which ended a run of 31 converted kicks from the spot since his last miss in an official match, for England at the 2022 World Cup.
But Kane then headed the winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time to spare Bayern blushes with his sixth goal in their three season games.
Happy Kimmich and proud Kaya
"It wasn't luck. But we must decide the game earlier. We had an extreme amount of chances. You could see that we wanted to and had to win the game. It was important to stay calm and patient after the equalizer," Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich told Sky TV.
Kaya said: "Of course I am happy with my two goals but I would have preferred to reach the next round. It is unbelievable how we fought back from two goals down. We were very close to an upset and can be very proud."
Bayern ring chances and lead early
Bayern are record German Cup winners but have not gone beyond the quarter-finals since their 20th success in 2020, with the drought including three second round exits.
Coach Vincent Kompany made six changes from the Bundesliga opening 6-0 demolition of RB Leipzig, with 17-year-old Lennart Karl earning a first start, Aleksandar Pavlovic returning from an eye socket fracture, and Jonas Urbig in goal for the suspended Manuel Neuer.
Diaz had a first chance thwarted by Stritzel 10 seconds into the game, but Bayern were ahead when Kane sent Stritzel the wrong way from the spot after Sacha Boey was pulled down by Ryan Johansson.
It was very much one-way traffic but Bayern's wastefulness almost backfired when the hosts burst forward in the 37th, with Kaya blocked and Nikolas Agrafiotis blazing over on the rebound.
Hosts hit back after Bayern's second
Bayern finally got their second six minutes after the restart from Olise when he took up an attempted clearance from Justin Janitzek and fired into the near right corner.
But, after more Bayern misses, Wiesbaden were back in the game when Kaya sneaked behind Germany defender Jonathan Tah at the far post to convert a long Niklas May cross from the left.
Six minutes Kaya found himself alone in front of Urbig and emphatically smashed home the equalizer.
Kane rescues Bayern after penalty miss
Stritzel then dove to his right to parry Kane's second penalty, and his header on the rebound, after the England captain was tripped by Milad Najad.
The hosts appeared to have forced extra time but Strietzel then hesitated on a cross from Josip Stanisic and Kane cooly nodded the winner to see them into the second round which is drawn on Sunday.
