Serhou Guirassy's goal secured Borussia Dortmund the three points in a 1-0 Bundesliga win at Augsburg on Friday evening, reported dpa.
In a first half of almost no goal chances, Guirassy took advantage of a huge mistake from the opponents.
Chrislain Matsima's clearance near the box deflected off Han-Noah Massengo and into the path of Guirassy, who slotted the ball into the net in the 37th minute.
Augsburg were much more energetic after the break, with a strong presence in Dortmund's half, but only managed one shot on target as Dortmund stood strong defensively.
Dortmund moved up to second place ahead of the weekend matches and four points behind leaders Bayern Munich, who host Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.
They travelled to Augsburg after an exhausting mid-week match at Eintracht Frankfurt in the German Cup, which they won only after a penalty shoot-out.
"In the end, 1-0 is exactly what we needed. Maybe the energy was not what it should be," goalkeeper Gregor Kobel said in view of the game in Frankfurt.
"It was difficult, we also made it difficult for us. We must win such games and I'm happy with the three points."
Augsburg, meanwhile, are 15th and just three points above the relegation zone.
Dortmund were without key defender Nico Schlotterbeck, who has a cold. He's also doubtful for Wednesday's match at City, coach Niko Kovac said.
The second half had to be interrupted just a few minutes after it started because Dortmund fans set off pyrotechnics. Some of the objects even landed on the pitch.
