FIFA has received 4.5 million applications for 2026 World Cup tickets in a pre-sale phase for credit card holders from their sponsors, the ruling football body said on Friday, reported dpa.
FIFA said that applications came from 216 countries and territories during the 10-day application pase which ended at 1500 GMT, led by the three host nations United States, Mexico and Canada.
The other top 10 applications came from Germany, England, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Spain and Italy.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino named the demand "a strong statement" of interest in the tournament expanded to 48 teams and 104 matches, naming it "the biggest, most inclusive and most exciting event ever seen."
Those drawn to buy tickets from $60 onwards for group stage matches will be notified from September 29 and are given a time slot to purchase them from October 1. But the time slot does not guarantee that tickets will be for sale, FIFA added.
Further ticket sale phases are to follow, before and after the group stage draw set for December 5 in Washington. So far 15 teams, led by title holders Argentina, have qualified along the automatically entered three co-hosts.
FIFA said it is also opening a secure resale platform.
