22 held after violence during Dutch football championship celebrations

Riots broke out in the Dutch city of Eindhoven on Sunday night following the final match of the Eredivisie, the Dutch professional football championship, leaving 14 police officers injured and resulting in 22 arrests, reported Xinhua, quoting local police on Monday.

The evening began with celebrations after PSV Eindhoven clinched the Eredivisie title. However, the festivities turned violent when clashes erupted between fans and police near the stadium.

According to police, the unrest began after officers attempted to arrest a man for setting off heavy fireworks. A crowd then turned on the officers, throwing stones, bottles, road signs, and fireworks.

Riot police were deployed to restore order. Fourteen officers sustained injuries, with two requiring hospital treatment.

Authorities arrested 22 men on charges including public violence, resisting arrest, and disobeying police orders. Four remain in custody, while the others were released overnight.

Police said they are considering area bans for some of the individuals involved and have launched an investigation to identify additional suspects.
